Don't automate all of them.
Pick one parameter with a clear musical purpose.
For example, a hook could begin almost dry. On the final note, increase the delay send so the tail spills into the next section. The MIDI is unchanged, yet the phrase now creates a transition.
Or automate a low-pass filter to open gradually over three repetitions.
The notes stay put.
The emotional intensity doesn't.
